Rouven Michels received his PhD at the Chair of Statistics and Data Analysis at the Faculty of Economics at Bielefeld University. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Statistics at the TU Dortmund in the research group Statistical Methods for Big Data. His research focuses on statistical modelling and machine learning, in particular on hidden Markov models, state space models and tree-based methods for regression and classification applied to sports data. Rouven Michels focuses on event and tracking data from various sports, such as soccer, American football and handball. His work aims to evaluate players and teams, improve strategic decision making, and understand the nature of sports.
